Soup, we need you! A rogue Arizona State representative, John Kavanagh, wants to pass a bill that would thow trans people in jail for using public restrooms. Anyone could be asked for I.D. to “prove” their gender, and if there’s a discrepancy they could face a fine or jailtime.

When asked why the bill targeted trans people, Kavanagh explained that it’s because he thinks “they’re weird.” Outrageous.

We can stop this bill by taking action at www.allout.org/arizona and spreading the word far and wide. Will you help?

Activist Janet Mock Flips the Script, Asks Alicia Menendez to Prove Her Womanhood

Turning the tables on Fusion’s Alicia Menendez, trans author and activist Janet Mock assumed the role of interviewer to demonstrate the invasive and inappropriate questions trans women regularly face in the media.

Mock began by commending Menendez in much the way that Piers Morgan attempted to deliver a backhanded compliment to Mock when he hosted her on his CNN program earlier this year.

"What’s so amazing is if I were to look at you, I would have never not known that you weren’t trans," Mock said to Menendez. She then rattled off a series of increasingly personal questions about the on-air personality’s anatomym and how her gender identity affects her perception of self and the world.

"Do you have a vagina?" Mock asked during the faux interview. "Do you feel like your idea of self, your cisness, holds you back in any way?"

After the mock interview, Menendez described her discomfort, surprising even herself, since she and her team had prepared the questions before the show. “I didn’t realize how awful and invasive some of [these questions] would feel,” said Menendez.

Wendy Carlos born November 14, 1939
AKA the mother of modern electronic music

This amazing woman composed and recorded the entire Clockwork Orange soundtrack, yeah, that shit, that amazing stuff, this gal, right here.  Also, The Shining, yep.  That scary masterpiece, this gal made the music that made you piss.

Her biggest break through album was Switched On Bach(1968) which, yes, is amazing synth-y classical jams.

She began transitioning with the use of hormones in 1968 and has also won like 4 friggin’ awards for being awesome!(actually, mostly for having amazing music which directly equals being friggin’ awesome)

So, if anyone asks you who the biggest bad ass in electronic-acoustic, or just electronic music in general, you tell them Wendy-God-Damn-Carlos

time didn’t even revise the results

they didn’t change the numbers

they left it clear that laverne cox was on top

and then they just straight up excluded laverne from their Influential 100 list because they felt like it.

i don’t need an explanation from them. i don’t need to understand their motives because fuck them.

— in case you missed it; time magazine had their "top 100 people"  poll, laverne cox was voted very high - and they dropped her out of the list. just like that.
that, my friends, is how transmisogynie works. you just make the people invisible and then say anyone who is like that is an exotic abomination :(

the asl sign for “transgender" is basically the same as the sign for "beautiful" but signed at the chest instead of in front of the face.

so that’s cool.

this is my imperfect not-a-fluent-signer understanding but:

(based on a presentation by a deaf trans guy i was at in 2005 where he was promoting that sign)

it seems like that sign was invented and implemented by trans people over the last 10-ish years. before that the predominant vocabulary was “sex change” and then some deaf trans people were like “yo fuck that” and came up with the current sign, which starts off with the sign for “myself,” then motion that indicates both change and coming together, and ends with the closed hand held against the sternum.

and in the process it also mimics the sign for “beautiful”

and because of spatial grammar, things closer to the front of your body in ASL are generally more vital, more emphatic, more immediate, more present.

so it’s actually a case where the word coherently indicates “beauty” and “self transformation” and contains hints of the complete thought of “my self transforming, through a coming together of disparate factors, into something more real, immediate, and vital than I was before.”

so yeah. that’s just fuckin’ awesome.

and that’s just the way to express that concept now.

FYI on the Facebook pronouns. I selected "them" and I now show up on my family's pages as their son/brother. I had my gender censored from them in a custom privacy setting but FB kinda inadvertently outed me. Just in case anyone is in the same boat, passing that along.

Oh wow. That’s kinda shitty—

PSA though.

Ahh, so not only are neutral pronouns getting masculine defaults for relation terms (really, it should be sibling, child, spouse, etc), relation terms aren’t ACLed.

This raises the question: how would you ACL those relationship terms? I mean, you have to put something there; otherwise that would flag as suspicious. I suppose showing gender-neutral terms as described above for anyone who doesn’t have the ACL is the obvious solution, but even that could be strange. I can just see: “My profile says you’re my ‘child’, now. What’s up with that?”

Really the ideal seems to be that, for safety, some people shouldn’t know you’ve set a custom gender.

So the real solution here is to allow a user to set multiple custom genders, each with a separate ACL list. So you can have a public / family view gender, and then a ‘for friends I’m out to’ gender, at a minimum.

In the meantime, signal boost, because this is going to be non-obvious to a whole lot of people and doesn’t seem to be documented anywhere.

this is Hourou Musuko, an anime/manga about a young trans girl and her friends, all figuring out their gender identity and sexual orientations

yo yo i just double-checked and it is a real thing and also available on crunchyroll for free!

It’s also on KissAnime for free which is a website I recommend 1000 times more since they provide HQ anime without having to pay anything, and they have a wider selection than Crunchyroll

Quebec filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée, who directed Dallas Buyers Club, spoke to CBC’s Jian Ghomeshi, who asked whether he ever considered casting a transgender actor.

"Never. [Are] there any transgender actors?" he said. "I’m not aiming for the real thing. I’m aiming for an experienced actor who wants to portray the thing." (x)
by “the thing” of course he means someone who is transgender

Female-assigned intersex kids’ vaginal canal size is also assessed by doctors, to ensure that it’s long enough to fit a penis inside of it. Doctors might surgically construct or re-construct vaginas, which can result in a host of health problems and necessitate multiple, multiple surgeries. This is especially the case since most intersex kids have these surgeries very young, and when their bodies grow into their adult forms, more surgeries are necessary to keep their vagina size in proportion. Non-surgical methods are also used to increase or maintain vaginal length by regularly using medical dildos to stretch the vagina over months and years. (It’s kind of like braces for your vagina, but much, much worse.) Just like there are no standards for how long a clitoris “can” be before it’s classified as a penis, there aren’t absolute standards as to how long a vagina is for it to be of “normal” length.

I had a dilation procedure performed for almost every exam I had with intersex doctors from the time I was 8 until I was 16, so that they could check how long my vagina was as I grew. I absolutely hated these procedures. I mean, imagine a man as old as your father or your grandfather, who you don’t know, inserting a medical dildo into you each time you saw him, knowing that you can’t question the doctor’s orders and just accept that you have to undergo these uncomfortable procedures for your health. Imagine a decade or so later, realizing that these procedures did nothing to track your health, and had everything to do with grown men feeling good about the fact that you could fuck some dude someday like a “normal girl”. That all those traumatizing procedures weren’t actually medically relevant at all, and it actually was within my right to refuse those examinations.

I didn’t know any of that at the time.

I also had no idea that I wouldn’t want to ultimately have the kind of sex they assumed I’d be having, adding yet another layer of this-was-totally-unnecessary/messed-up to my history.

Other kids shouldn’t have to go through this. Other adults shouldn’t have revelations some day far into the future that what was happening to them WASN’T okay, and their traumatic feelings ARE valid, and the whole system of how intersex people are conceptualized and “treated” IS entirely fucked.

And it’s gotta change. We’ve gotta change it.

—-Claudia at Autostraddle

I just read this article and was reminded once again how invisible the intersex community often is… we need to signal boost this shit to let people know that this kind of “medical treatment” is NOT okay.

Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short and wear shirts and boots because it’s okay to be a boy; for girls it’s like promotion. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, according to you, because secretly you believe that being a girl is degrading.
